Phish Tour Stories

We know you got them...............So lets hear 'em

  1. 4/13/1994- Beacon Theatre, NYC
My very first phish show...I was a junior in HS and went to my first show with few of my friends, who happened to be all girls (go figure)... anyway, I had been listening to phish for almost a year @ this point and I was already hooked. As I am sure you can all remember, this was in the days of Maxel's & TDK's; and I was on a quest to obtain as many tapes as possible and thanks to some early heads I had acquired a nice collection (Thanx Singer)

In 1994 phish was gaining some notoriety, but were still playing smaller venues such as theatres, colleges and music halls across the country. We all knew this band was on the verge of exploding into something really special. The music was fresh; the jams were tight & concise, more rock than jam…

So as we entered the Beacon, my friends Rachel and Melina snuck in a 1 foot Graffix binger and like 3 boxes of Whippets, with the whip cream dispenser and all… not sure how they did it, but I guess the security was pretty lax back in the day… our seats were great: first row of the first balcony, dead center, right in front of Trey who was on cructhes… I don’t remember how we scored these tix, but needless to say it wasn’t from an email list or stub-hub…

Buried Alive started the show, but it didn’t really get going until Stash with it’s seemingly exploratory jamming. The first set highlights included Julius, D-Sky & Golgi to close it out… I was rocking out all set; we were sucking down balloons and really enjoying ourselves thorough out. Set break was indeed a PUFF down, as the Graffix was making its rounds throughout our section. Also, for some of you ‘ol timers, the set break featured the audience chess move…
The second set started with Faht which is a super weird song off of Picture of Nectar. The Sample/Reba combo floored me… so much energy of which I had NEVER experienced prior. I was lucky enough to see a BBJ and Take the A Train, which I don’t think I have seen live since. I was thinking how big a clown Fishman was during the Purple Rain>HYHU… then again phish reenergized the Beacon with the Bag to end the set.
I fondly remember in the relative silence prior to the Sweet Adeline a phan yelled out Baba-Booie, Baba-Booie for a Stern Show shout out… this was NYC in the mid 90’s and NO ONE was bigger than Howard Stern… The GTBT closed the show in rocking fashion, leaving me yearning for more… being the numskull that I was (or am, depending on who you ask) I did not see the next 2 nights @ the Beacon… a decision, other than missing Halloween ’94 that I truly regret. Next stop for me was Jones Beach, summer 1994.

Set 1: Buried Alive > Poor Heart, Stash The Lizards, Julius, Ginseng Sullivan, The Divided Sky, Golgi Apparatus
Set 2: Faht, The Curtain, Sample in a Jar, Reba, Big Ball Jam, Fee, Take the 'A' Train, David Bowie, Purple Rain > Hold Your Head Up, AC/DC Bag Encore: Sweet Adeline, Good Times Bad Times

  3. great review chasin. i was at all 3 the shows were epic. the first two nights i was 15th row orch dead center. the 3rd night we were upper balcony and right as the gch starrted playing i just remember the exit door swinging open and like 50 hippies marching into the balcony from the fire exit like mid second set at the beacon. crazieness.

then there was chasis graffix which i found the first night. also the first night, i remember, me and my friend b rock were so early we went in and literally we were the only 2 people in the place. we go to our seats and just stare around the beacon like whoa-its totally empty. like shouting hello and shit trying to make it echo. so then me and rock are standing there 15th row, and this lady walks out of backstage and walks down the first row isle and rock is like "i think thats fishmans mom" cause he knew what she looked like from a show he saw her at or something, so then she walks down the main isle and pulls a move only like a trey would pull, literally rock and i are at our seats and the place is empty, she bangs a right and walks in the row right in front of us, and comes towards as to walk right past us-no one else in the place-and she turns around and stops and looks me in the eye and says "you boys are here early" and i say "are you fishmans mom" and she says "no im treys mom" and im like "wow your son is really really really talented" and shes like "thanks enjoy the show" and walked back to the same backstage door and went back. might not seem so crazy u kinda had to be there...one of the most whaaked out encounters ive ever had and i have seen some shit in my day i assure you.

followed up by the sikest 3 night run ive ever seen at the beacon. been there prob 50+ times.

my first phish show was feb 93 at roseland. not the one w popper-the night before. i was at the horde before that in 92 but had to leave as phish was taking the stage at the end, as i was 15 and with some other 15 year old horde head and we already had one of our mothers waiting for over an hour in the parking lot, actually pretty sure it was my mother. we caught panic, blues traveler, aquarium resuce unit, and spin doctors that night, but had to bail on phish at the end. ive never known jones beach to go to 1 am before or after that day without any rain delays.

anyway my second show was 12-29-93 at new haven colesium and thats the one that hooked me. they had the stage set up like a phish tank which was also cool.

in addition to the beacon and new haven some of my favorite earlier shows i saw included halloween 94, jones beach 94 letter to jimmy page>bowie w the jessica teases, providence 12-29-94 stands out among entire new years run 94 & 95...the entire new years run 96 was sik...4 shows at red rocks 96, summer 95 at walnut creek,nc where i basically was holding onto the lawn so i didnt fall into the sky. boyd tinsley and trey headbanging during runaway jim then the "yem-ish" vocal jam at the end of jim which featured a "lassie come home" chant or at least thats what i heard>sikest free ive ever heard. plus the first set had cry baby cry and a split open tease>catapult split open set closer that was nuts...the next show at nissan pavillion virginia summer 95, garden state arts center NJ 7-2-94 possibly the best one i ever saw. last 2 gamehenge shows were played a week before and a week ater that (i didnt see either) but imo that 7-2-94 show was better then both.

the 2 shows i saw at jones beach in 2009 were also among the best. best ive seen of phish in a LONG time.

  4. Well said guys... I know you loved that pavilion show Singer with that Three little birds. You still talk about that to this day. My DMB /Phish experience would be a memorable one when Leroy moore came out during the multi instrument jam I believe in VA Beach. Not sure if that was the ’97 or ’98 but it was redic either way. My first show starts where Chasin would wind up next Jones Beach 7/15/95. It was the letter to jimmy paige opener with the only solar powered show ever. My first lot scene would be most likely my scariest one to date. I was probably trippin’ my face off in the lot when I realized I locked my keys in the car. That wasn’t even the bad part it was that I had a bag of weed in plain site in the car. I had to get a trooper to jimmy the car and I was shitting my pants the entire time thinking how can he not see this. Anyway he did not see it which was shocking and we enjoyed the show.
Some of my fav phish moments would have to be 97 & 98 turkey run (Worcester), new haven 12/2/95 where I had mail order tix and did not realize that I had 1st row center until the usher kept in walking and walking to our seats. I have never been that close to a show to this day. Singer I think you were sitting next to me and Bush for that show. Redic!! I do remember a Mounds bar flying over my head and it was the 1st and only Faht I have seen. The garden shows bring back many memories.. Seeing Chasins face when they busted out the Sneakin Sally in ’97. Phish has played 30 sets at the garden totaling 13 shows and I have seen 28 sets filled with great memories and unreal jams. Did not see 12/30/94 and tonight will be the only other msg show that I would have missed. Summer ’95 was also an unreal run hitting the final 9 shows of the tour ending with JP & I getting silly with some hip crack where we wound up at a clinic getting stiches on jon’s head. Hahaha… I’m sure like all of us there were so many unreal times that we can’t possibly name them all..
